What is Epstein-Barr virus and how does it affect people who are infected with it?

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the herpes family and is also known as herpes virus 4. It is one of the most common viruses around the world. Nearly every human is exposed to EBV at some point in their lives, with children being infected most often. Adults and teenagers usually get better in 2 to 4 weeks, but some can have symptoms for months. While symptoms can become chronic, taking a functional Medicine approach to the infection can improve symptoms and prevent further consequences of the virus.

Once the symptoms have ceased, the virus becomes dormant and inactive in the body, but it can reactivate at a later time. Once reactivated, the carrier can again pass the virus to others no matter how long it’s been since the initial infection. It is estimated that 90% percent of adults have antibodies that show a current or past EBV infection.

EBV is spread through bodily fluids, like saliva, blood, and semen, but it can also be spread via organ transplants. EBV is known to cause other illnesses, such as infectious mononucleosis, also known as, mono, and it can be spread by kissing, sex, and eating or drinking after someone that has EBV through the use of cups, utensils, toothbrushes.

Diagnoses of EBV are difficult to make due to the symptoms being closely related to other illnesses, but it can be detected with blood tests that detects antibodies. Initial infections of EBV are often mild and closely parallel the symptoms of a common cold. Some of the general symptoms of an EBV infection include:

  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Low-grade fever
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Nasal congestion

In teenagers or young adults that develop mononucleosis symptoms of an infection often set in around four to six weeks after exposure to the virus, and some of these symptoms can be more severe. Earlier symptoms are similar the symptoms of a cold or a flu, and as the illness progresses, symptoms can increase in severity. Some of the additional symptoms of an advanced infection may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Inflamed or sore throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Rash
  • Swollen liver

While there is no known cure for EBV, treatments for EBV include getting plenty of rest, drinking fluids to stay hydrated, and taking over-the-counter pain and fever medications. Dr. Anju Mathur’s Back to Wellness Program will incorporate several therapies that will help to improve the symptoms of illness and prevent further negative side effects from taking place.
