Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver and refers to a class of viral infections that affect the liver. Viral hepatitis is the leading cause of liver disease, which can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis or scarring of the liver.

More than 4.4 million Americans have hepatitis, and most do not know that they are infected. Forms of hepatitis are hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, with A, B, and C being the most common forms. Hepatitis A and E are usually acquired from food, water, or fecal matter, and Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through blood or semen. Hepatitis D cannot happen without the presence of Hepatitis B. Only Hepatitis B and C can become chronic, and any type may cause inflammation of the liver.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B (HBV) is a serious viral infection of the liver. HBV can be acute or chronic and in some cases, acute HBV can become chronic HBV. Acute HBV is a short-term illness that takes anywhere from three weeks to three months to incubate and manifest symptoms.

Chronic HBV is a long-term illness that can result in a severe medical illness, such as cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer, or even death. HBV can be transmitted by blood, semen, or other bodily fluids during sex or the sharing of needles during drug use. HBV can also be passed from mother to child during birth.

Symptoms of HBV include:

  • Headache
  • Muscle Aches and Pains
  • Mild Fever
  • Flu Like Symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Poor Appetite
  • Stomach Pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Skin Rash
  • Dark Urine
  • Pale-Colored Skin
  • Weight Loss
  • Pale-Colored Stool
  • Jaundice (Yellowing of Eyes or Skin)

Hepatitis C

HCV is the most common blood borne infection in the United States, with approximately 3.2 million Americans unknowingly infected. Hepatitis C (HCV) is serious viral infection of the liver. Like HBV, HCV can be acute or chronic, but unlike HBV, acute HCV will develop into chronic HCV in most cases.

Acute HCV is a short-term illness and chronic HCV is a very serious long-term illness that can result in liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. HCV is generally transmitted by needles during recreational drug use, but may be spread during sexual activity.

HCV is difficult to diagnose due to most people not exhibiting symptoms early enough before the disease progresses.

When initially infected With HCV, the symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased Appetite
  • Muscle Aches & Pains

Most symptoms of HCV aren’t apparent until the virus becomes chronic and cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver, develops and the liver begins to fail.

These symptoms include:

  • Blood Clotting Problems
  • Weight Loss
  • Joint Pain
  • Itchy Skin
  • Feeling Weak
  • Dark-Colored Urine
  • Jaundice (Yellowing of Eyes & Skin)

In her comprehensive healing program, San Fernando Valley Hepatitis specialist, Dr. Anju Mathur uses certain treatment therapies that are a part of the Back to Wellness Program to reduce the symptoms of chronic hepatitis and improve overall liver function. Phospholipid Exchange Therapy can detoxify the body at a cellular level, and it may cleanse the cells of viral toxins to improve overall organ function. IV Nutrient Therapy can allow the body to get the nutrition it needs to support a healthy immune system and overcome chronic Hepatitis.

Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation can help to cleanse the blood of viruses or bacteria, which may help the body to rid itself of hepatitis. Chelation Therapy may also help to detoxify the liver, which can help the body to improve the condition of Hepatitis. Dr. Anju Mathur uses what is called an integrative functional medicine approach, which is designed to thoroughly investigate and determine the appropriate treatment protocols.
