What is Metabolic Typing®?
Metabolic Typing® uncovers the patterns of the genetically based strengths and weaknesses that make up each individual, on a physiological and biochemical level, and it is as unique as fingerprints. It evolved through a correlation of the known scientific facts concerning the fundamental control systems, with the clinical observation and empirical experience of hundreds of practitioners, and hundreds of thousands of cases over the last 33+ years.
Simply put there are two major bodily functions that influence energy levels and the type of fuel a person needs to maintain optimum energy levels. The systems that control this are the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and Oxidative System. It could be said that the ANS regulates energy levels, and the Oxidative system regulates how food is converted to energy. These two systems are genetically unique to each person. Thus, it is vital that patients have a diet and follow a diet that is ideal for the optimum efficiency of the ANS and Oxidative system. There are 9 possible metabolic types involved in comparing the ANS and the Oxidative system, and Dr. Mathur specializes in getting each patient’s type accurately established so that he or she can eat to live.

The 9 Metabolic Types
In the first part of the classification, the patient’s system will be dominated through the sympathetic nervous system, which is the fight or flight system, or the parasympathetic nervous system, which takes over during resting. Some people will have a healthy balance of both. Patient’s digestive functions will be primarily:
- Sympathetic Type
- Balanced Type
- Parasympathetic Type
In the second part of the classification, patients will be considered:
Slow Oxidizer Type
Slow oxidizers do well with an increased amount of carbohydrates and do not process fats and proteins very well. This group does better with a diet that consists of healthy carbs and less meat and fats.
Mixed Oxidizer Type
This group can easily burn and balance a mix of fats, carbs, and proteins, and they do better eating a balanced combination of all three of these things.
Fast Oxidizer Type
Fast Oxidizers are poor at burning fats and rely on carbohydrates for most of their energy; however, increased carbohydrates can cause problems. This group needs a higher amount of protein and fats in order to balance energy production.
The nine combination types include:
- Sympathetic Fast
- Sympathetic Mixed
- Sympathetic Slow
- Balanced Fast
- Balanced Mixed
- Balanced Slow
- Parasympathetic Fast
- Parasympathetic Mixed
- Parasympathetic Slow
Food & Health
Make no mistake; food is the most powerful “drug” on this earth. You eat it several times a day, every day of your life. It contains hundreds upon hundreds of compounds that your body uses as its “fuel for life.” Your food can be your medicine or your poison. It has the power to heal, but it also has the power to make you ill if you eat foods that are wrong for you. With the exception of accidents and suicide, the 10 leading causes of death in the US can all be caused from eating the wrong diet, and all of them have been cured by eating the right diet!
It’s not only what you eat; it’s also in what proportions you consume your macro-nutrients ( proteins, fats, and carbohydrates ) that will allow you to maximize your energy, develop peak performance, normalize your appetite, and be as trim as you can be. After eating, you should feel an elevation of your energy, a normalization of your moods, and a sense of feeling satisfied. If, within 1-2 hours after eating, you feel more tired, your mood worsens, or you still feel hungry, crave sweets, or need a “pick-me-up,” then you need to change the ratio of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates at that meal until your symptoms improve.
One of the greatest things about our Los Angeles Metabolic Typing Nutritional Weight Loss Programs is that it is not just a tailored diet plan, but it is also a fully tailored nutritional program with supplements that are specifically recommended for your metabolic type.
