Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex and debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Individuals suffering from this condition experience extreme fatigue that worsens with physical or mental activity and does not improve with rest.
At Angel Longevity Medical Center, we offer comprehensive chronic fatigue treatment aimed at improving the quality of life for those affected by this condition.
Do you know the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for chronic fatigue syndrome?
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), is a long-term illness characterized by severe fatigue that cannot be explained by any underlying medical condition. This fatigue is often exacerbated by physical or mental activity and is not alleviated by rest. The exact cause of CFS is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and biological factors.
Common Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
While fatigue is the hallmark symptom of CFS, there are many other common symptoms associated with the condition. These symptoms can vary from person to person and may include:
- Abdominal pain
- Alcohol intolerance
- Bloating
- Chest pain
- Chronic cough
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Dry eyes or mouth
- Earaches
- Irregular heartbeat
- Jaw pain
- Morning stiffness
- Nausea
- Night sweats
- Psychological problems (depression, irritability, anxiety, panic attacks)
- Shortness of breath
- Tingling sensations
- Weight loss
Diagnostic Criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
In addition to the common symptoms mentioned above, individuals must exhibit at least four or more of the following nine symptoms for a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome.
These symptoms must have started after the onset of the condition and not before:
- Muscle Pain: Persistent muscle pain unrelated to any specific injury or overuse.
- Unrefreshing Sleep: Feeling unrefreshed after a full night’s sleep.
- Chronic Sore Throat: A sore throat that persists over time.
- Flu-like Symptoms Following Activity: Experiencing flu-like symptoms after engaging in physical or mental activity.
- Tender Lymph Nodes: Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpit without any apparent infection.
- Joint Pain Without Swelling or Redness: Pain in the joints that are not accompanied by swelling or redness.
- Reduction in Short-term Memory or Concentration: Difficulty concentrating or remembering recent events.
- Headaches Not Common to the Individual: Experiencing headaches that are different in severity, type, or pattern from those typically experienced.
- Malaise Lasting More Than 24 Hours After Slight Exertion: Feeling ill or extremely tired for more than 24 hours after minor physical or mental exertion.
Challenges in Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome can be challenging due to the wide range of symptoms and their overlap with other medical conditions. There is no single test for CFS; instead, diagnosis is typically made based on a combination of patient history, symptom assessment, and ruling out other potential causes of fatigue.
