Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease. It affects more than 10 million Americans and is the leading cause of vision loss.

Understanding Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration develops when the central portion of the retina (the macula) begins to deteriorate. The macula focuses central vision in the eye, allowing us to read, drive, recognize faces, and see fine detail.

When the macula is working correctly, it collects detailed images in the center of your vision and sends them to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain then interprets them as sight. When the cells in the macula deteriorate, the images are received incorrectly and vision problems occur.

The symptoms

The symptoms of macular degeneration depend on whether the disease is in the early, intermediate, or late stages:

  • Early. In the early stages of macular degeneration, your vision likely won’t be affected. However, the disease can still be detected during a regular eye exam.
  • Intermediate. As the disease progresses, you may experience wavy or blurry vision.
  • Late. At its most advanced stage, you may completely lose your central vision.

With macular degeneration, it’s possible to retain your peripheral vision. However, this is not as clear as central vision, so it is very common to be considered legally blind with this disease.

What causes macular degeneration?

We don’t yet know precisely what causes macular degeneration – but we do know that it is a result of both genetics and your environment. Growing older is the most prominent risk factor for developing the disease, although it is also linked to genes, smoking, diet, and high blood pressure.

TREATING MACULAR DEGENERATION WITH FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Functional medicine is an extremely effective way to treat macular degeneration. At Angel Longevity Medical Center, our comprehensive “Back to Wellness Program” can be tailored to improve this disease and alleviate symptoms.

Depending on the stage of your macular degeneration, we may recommend a blend of the following treatments:

Chelation therapy

Elevated lead levels are often associated with macular degeneration. As such, we may recommend chelation therapy to bind to the lead and help guide it out of the body.

Light therapy

Laser light therapy has the potential to improve the symptoms of macular degeneration by stimulating circulation and cellular function.

Microcurrent stimulation

Microcurrent stimulation is a one-hour, in-office treatment that improves blood flow, promotes cellular activity, and reduces inflammation. It can also make your eyes stronger, which is a vital part of treating macular degeneration.

IV therapy

Nutritional supplements are very important when treating macular degeneration. As part of your healing program, we will recommend a custom blend of nutrients delivered directly to your blood stream to restore balance to your body.

Ozone therapy

Ozone therapy is a powerful treatment for macular degeneration. For many patients, it can slow the progression of the disease and improve vision.
